Phantom Blade Zero Review: Action RPG Comparison
Phantom Blade Zero is widely regarded as one of the best action RPGs of its generation, primarily due to its exceptionally satisfying and well-tuned combat, despite having a convoluted story and occasional performance issues IGN. The game, which follows the martial artist Soul on a 66-day quest for revenge across the Phantom World, excels in its combat mechanics, which feel instantly natural and compelling IGN.
What Happened / The Facts
Phantom Blade Zero was announced during the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase Wccftech. The game is set in the Wulin, China's legendary martial underworld, and features the protagonist Soul, an assassin from the Order who is betrayed and given a fatal condition of only 66 days left to live Wccftech. The game features eight maps, each containing foes, side quests, chests, and secrets IGN.
What It Means
For players prioritizing combat feel, Phantom Blade Zero is a strong contender; the precise parry and dodge mechanics feel natural, and the nuanced weapon and combo system is rolled out at a smart pace IGN. The game is described as a "wide-linear" experience, where maps have linear paths but branch out with optional secrets, avoiding the stale repetition of some similar titles because enemies do not respawn Wccftech.
Comparison
| Feature | IGN Assessment | Wccftech Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Combat | Satisfying, well-tuned, effortless smooth action IGN | Delivers without question; centered on combat mechanics Wccftech |
| Story | Convoluted, too much mystical jargon, complex timeline IGN | Serviceable, rooted in Wuxia and steampunk; narrative issues exist Wccftech |
| Flaws | Occasional performance issues, bad geometry (Soul getting caught) IGN | Disjointed narration, consistent jump between past and present Wccftech |
Our view is that the game's mastery of combat mechanics outweighs its narrative and technical inconsistencies, making it a high-quality entry in the action RPG genre for players who value moment-to-moment gameplay above all else.
